In 2014, around 1 billion people were smoking cigarettes. That was equivalent to 20% of the world’s population. Being able to stop smoking is a great way to boost your health. It can lessen your chances of acquiring cancer and other lung conditions.

According to WHO, 480,000 Americans are killed by smoking cigarettes yearly. In addition to this, even those who don’t smoke are affected. There are around 41,000 deaths due to second-hand smoke.

Nicotine is the substance that makes smoking cigarettes highly addictive. How exactly can you stop smoking cigarettes? Here are some useful tips on how you can successfully quit smoking.

  • Cold Turkey

Doctors highly suggest doing it cold turkey. That means waking up the next day without any cigarettes whatsoever. This can be quite difficult especially for someone who has been smoking for years. Cigarette withdrawal will most likely kick in if you opt to do it this way.

If you opt to remove the habit abruptly, it is imperative that you are prepared for the consequences. It is a good idea that you find an alternative habit to smoking.  For instance, you may want to keep yourself busy with other hobbies.

Nicotine replacement therapy

A lot of times, nicotine replacement therapy works especially if you are worried about the withdrawal symptoms associated with the lack of nicotine in your system. It comes in the form of nicotine patches or using e-cigarettes that have different nicotine content in their liquid.

The common problem that you’ll encounter with nicotine replacement therapy though is that you may still become over-reliant on nicotine that your dependence on nicotine remains even after a long time.

  • Stay away from people who smoke

It is easy to find yourself tempted to smoke. If you are going to quit smoking, it is a good idea that you don’t go near people who are also smoking. This lessens the chances of failing to quit smoking.

Instead, it is a good idea that you stick with people who are also trying to quit smoking. You can find yourself getting support from them. You’ll feel relieved by the fact that you are not the only one suffering. You can also talk to a therapist if you feel that the urge is simply too strong for you.

  • Eat antioxidants

Anti-oxidants can help get rid of nicotine and other toxins that are found in your system. This can help lead to a lesser impact on your withdrawal symptoms. Foods that can help you detox include orange, water, spinach, and broccoli to name a few.

  • Body Detox Systems

There are some body detox systems marketed to help purge nicotine from your body quickly, and therefore ending the urges quicker. Some even come with a home urine drug test kit that enables you to test the levels of cotinine (a metabolite of nicotine).

Seeing your urine detox levels drop significantly, supposedly gives you a psychological boost as well to help in quitting for good. I haven’t tried these yet but they are quite popular. Just be prepared to go on a 3-4 day diet and eat certain foods that are part of the detox regimen.

  • Do some physical exercises

Exercise can help get your attention away from smoking. In addition to this, you will also increase your endorphins. This elevates your mood which is a great way to counteract the effect of withdrawal symptoms that can get you depressed.

It even helps in getting rid of chemicals that are stuck in your system. When you work out, you can flush toxins out of your system when you sweat. You can even go to the sauna after a workout to clean your system and lessen the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.
